Did you know? Canada's premiere Judoka, Nicholas Gill, was honoured as Canada's flag bearer at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Judo is always one of the first Olympic events to sell out of tickets, and more countries participate in Judo than all other Olympic sports except Track and Field. Judo is the 2nd most widely-practiced sport worldwide. (Soccer is #1) The only other sport that burns more calories/hour than Judo is polo (yes, the horse kind.) According to the American College of Sports Medicine, Judo is the safest contact sport for children under age 13. The Red and White Judo tournament was started by Judo's founder, Professor Jigoro Kano in 1884 and continues today as one of the longest running sports events in the world, predating the Modern Olympic Games by 12 years. In Japanese, Judo means "The Gentle Way". |
